Special Issue Introduction
This Special Issue will consist of A Selection of Papers from the first American Society for Intercellular Communication (ASIC) 2021 Meeting (
https://web.cvent.com/event/5052a5df-8161-4e80-91bc-21b1294f2f10/summary ) held on Oct 21-23 at the Bolger Center in Potomac, MD, USA, and also virtually. Various novel modes of intercellular communication, such as via extracellular vesicles and nucleic acids, have been shown to be increasingly important in physiological function and in causing disease. There were more than 50 speakers and many posters presented at the conference. This conference brings together researchers from many aspects of intercellular communication from extracellular vesicles, including exosomes from different body fluids, cells, and tissues, as well as circulating DNA and RNA of various species. The papers presented cover many areas, from biogenesis to characterizing the contents of extracellular vesicles secreted in normal and disease states, such as cancer or after viral infection. The methods of isolation and analysis of extracellular vesicle content and nucleic acids for liquid biopsy and development of biomarkers were presented at the conference. Articles in this Special Issue represent discussions of the state-of-the-art and up-to-date coverage of progress in various modes of intercellular communication, such as extracellular vesicles, DNA, and RNA in many different cell types.
